Wisconsin cop snapped after being called a ‘worthless pig’

CRANDON, Wis. – A young sheriff’s deputy who opened fire on a pizza party and killed six people flew into a rage when he was rebuffed by his old girlfriend – and others called him a “worthless pig.”
A longtime friend told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel yesterday that 20-year-old Tyler Peterson came to his door in the hours after the rampage and calmly explained what he had done.
“He wasn’t running around crazy or anything. He was very, very sorry for what he did,” Mike Kegley told the paper, adding that he gave Peterson coffee and food and then called 911.
Peterson told Kegley that he had gone to his ex-girlfriend’s house early Sunday morning in hopes of patching up the relationship after a recent breakup.
He said Peterson lost control when an argument erupted and other people started ridiculing him as a “worthless pig.”
Police, who declined to provide details of the argument, said Peterson stormed out, retrieved an AR-15 rifle from his car outside and burst back into the house firing 30 shots that killed all but one of the people at the party.
“We had no idea, obviously, that anything like this would ever occur,” Crandon Police Chief John Dennee said at a news conference yesterday.
Peterson, a deputy and part-time police officer in the tiny town, later died after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement officers. It was unclear if police shot Peterson or he killed himself.
Police acknowledged yesterday that Peterson had received no psychological screening before he was hired.
Some questioned the wisdom of hiring someone so young.
“No person that I’ve ever known at 20 years old was responsible enough to be a police officer,” said Steve Bocek of Oak Creek, Wis., whose nephew Bradley Schultz was killed. “It’s unbelievable.”

Prayer removed from victims memorial service after liberal group complained

Prayer nixed at rite for victims
Associated Press — 9/22/2007 9:17 am
The Wisconsin Department of Justice has removed religious content from a memorial service for murder victims planned for next week after a watchdog group complained.
A religious hymn called “This Too Shall Pass” and a closing prayer by a Lutheran pastor will not be included in the ceremony as initially planned, department spokesman Kevin St. John said Friday.
The Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation complained Tuesday that the hymn and the prayer at the state-sponsored event would violate the separation of church and state guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution.
After a review, St. John said the department agreed the content was on shaky constitutional footing.
“Rather than create the unintentional appearance that the state was endorsing religion or a particular creed, the department amended the program to exclude those parts,” he said. “We certainly wouldn’t want to have an appearance of a potential church-state violation overshadow the event.”
He said the event, scheduled at the Capitol on Tuesday, would be the first of its kind in Wisconsin. Other events will take place around the country, including one in Washington, as part of the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims.
Pastor Charles Peterson, who had been scheduled to deliver the closing prayer, said he believed other ceremonies would include prayer. He said prayer can help mourners discover their spirituality.
“That’s what people are looking for when they take part in a remembrance like this,” he said. “I don’t think they are looking for liberal politics.”
As for the state’s decision to cancel his prayer, he said: “That’s fine with me. That’s their loss, not mine.”
The foundation, the nation’s largest group of atheists and agnostics, praised Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen’s office for quickly addressing its protest. The group said it complained on behalf of family members of murder victims and state employees who will take part in the event.
In the complaint, group co-president Annie Laurie Gaylor said the lyrics to the religious hymn would offend some in the audience “by advancing the idea that the murder of their beloved child was part of a deity’s plan!”
She cited the following passage: “He’ll never give you more than you can bear/This too shall pass / So in this thought be comforted/It’s in His hands.”
“Grieving and vulnerable families should not be proselytized by state government or be told how or what they are expected to believe,” Gaylor wrote. “The state should not be selecting which minister, which denomination or which religion should confer blessings, thereby excluding all the rest of us.”
Gaylor also asked Van Hollen to scrap the religious overtones of an annual ceremony at the Capitol that commemorates law enforcement officials who died in the line of duty.
She said that event inappropriately included a chaplain, prayer and a rendition of “Amazing Grace.”
St. John said state officials participate in the event but it is hosted by a nonprofit group. As a result, he said, “there’s nothing about that ceremony which would run afoul of the First Amendment.”

Illegal immigrant arrested for alleged sexual contact with boy, 8

A 41-year-old illegal immigrant was arrested Saturday for allegedly having sexual contact with an 8-year-old boy at a home on the city’s south side, Sheboygan police said.

The incident was reported by the boy’s mother about 3:45 a.m., soon after the assault is believed to have taken place, said Detective Matt Walsh.

The man, who police will ask prosecutors to charge with first-degree sexual assault, is the third illegal immigrant arrested for a felony offense in recent weeks.

Few details on the nature of the assault were available Saturday, but Walsh said police believe it is a one-time occurrence. He said the boy’s mother suspected something had happened and called police after confirming it with her son.

The man was a friend of the boy’s family and is believed to have been living in Sheboygan about six months, Walsh said.

In other recent cases, illegal immigrant Eddie Carbajal-Lile, 27, has been charged with causing a fatal crash that killed a Port Washington teen on Aug. 14, and 17-year-old Martin L. Gamez — whose immigration status is being questioned by federal authorities — was charged Friday with sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl on Aug. 16.

Another illegal immigrant, Mauro Cisneros, 33, was arrested Aug. 20 for a traffic violation and police discovered he was a twice-deported felon with previous arrests for drug dealing, kidnapping, burglary and robbery.
