Lieberman Blasts Democrats Over Partisan-Driven Foreign Policy
Thursday , November 08, 2007
WASHINGTON — Sen. Joe Lieberman on Thursday painted a dim picture of his party, saying Democrats have given up their moral authority on foreign policy because they are more concerned with opposing Republicans than doing what is right.
The former presidential candidate and hawkish senator from Connecticut also came down hard on critics of a resolution he and Sen. John Kyl, R-Ariz., co-sponsored calling on the Bush administration to label the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
“For many Democrats, the guiding conviction in foreign policy isn’t pacifism or isolationism, it is distrust and disdain of Republicans in general, and President Bush in particular,” Lieberman said at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies.
“In this regard, the Democratic foreign policy worldview has become defined by the same reflexive, blind opposition to the President that defined Republicans in the 1990s — even when it means repudiating the very principles and policies that Democrats as a party have stood for, at our best and strongest,” Lieberman continued.
Lieberman — who has run for the top spot in the Oval Office as well as the No. 2 — is unique in the Senate, having won re-election last year following a Democratic primary election defeat tinged with anti-war sentiment. He ran a rare successful independent campaign by stumping largely on his foreign policy stance in support of the Iraq war and against terrorism. Lieberman has maintained his Democratic affiliation, caucusing in the Senate with Democrats.
On Thursday, Lieberman waxed nostalgic over foreign policy giants Democrats like Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman and John Kennedy, but said that after Vietnam, it took until the Clinton administration to regain an internationalist, interventionist attitude among Democrats.
Just as soon as that attitude returned, it left again once the Bush administration took the reins in the post-Sept. 11, 2001, atmosphere. He said President Bush’s call for the spread of democracy across the globe followed a campaign in which, as Lieberman described it, Bush was less interested in foreign policy than his Democratic opponent, Al Gore. Lieberman was Gore’s running mate.
“The Bush administrations post-9/11 ideological conversion confronted Democrats with an awkward choice. Should we welcome the president’s foreign policy flip-flop? Or should Democrats match it with a flip-flop of our own?” Lieberman said.
“I felt strongly that Democrats should embrace the basic framework that the president articulated for the War on Terror as our own — because it was our own. It was our legacy … But that was not the choice most Democrats made. Instead, they flip-flopped,” he said.
Lieberman said Democrats aren’t being guided by principle, but partisanship.
“Even as evidence has mounted that General Petraeus’ new counterinsurgency strategy is succeeding, Democrats have remained emotionally invested in a narrative of defeat and retreat in Iraq, reluctant to acknowledge the progress we are now achieving, or even that that progress has enabled us to begin drawing down our troops there,” he added.
Just as Lieberman was speaking, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the House will take up a temporary Iraq spending bill which will curb the war in Iraq. The plan, known as the “bridge,” provides $50 billion for four months in Iraq and starts a withdrawal of troops to be completed by next December.
“This (war strategy) is not working. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. We must reverse it. We will again make a distinction … to show a new direction in Iraq. The goal is ending it within a year and leave behind just a small force,” she said.
Lieberman defended the IRGC amendment adopted in September as a peaceful resolution designed to avoid further conflict with Iran, which military officials accuse of waging a proxy war against U.S. forces in Iraq.
Sen. Clinton was among those voting in favor of the amendment, but others have attacked the resolution and Clinton because of her support for it. Critics argue the resolution could give Bush the authority to attack Iran.
One of the amendment’s chief critics, Sen. Jim Webb, said that by labeling the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organization, it is tantamount to a war declaration on Iran because it is labeling the country’s elite military organization as a terrorist group.
The amendment was adopted on a 77-22 vote, with two senators not voting. Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Joe Biden and Chris Dodd voted against the amendment; Barack Obama did not vote.
Lieberman said while he thought the amendment would be a no-brainer, what resulted was a “case study in the distrust and partisan polarization that now poisons our body politic on even the most sensitive issues of national security.”
He said left-wing blogs offered “wild conspiracy theories,” and the amendment had “nothing that could be construed as a green light for an attack on Iran.”
“There is something profoundly wrong — something that should trouble all of us — when we have elected Democratic officials who seem more worried about how the Bush administration might respond to Iran’s murder of our troops, than about the fact that Iran is murdering our troops.
“There is likewise something profoundly wrong when we see candidates who are willing to pander to this politically paranoid, hyper-partisan sentiment in the Democratic base, even if it sends a message of weakness and division to the Iranian regime,” Lieberman said in a thinly veiled swipe at Clinton’s Democratic challengers.

Pork Alert! Citizens Against Government Waste looks at the defense spending bill
posted at 3:43 pm on November 7, 2007 by Bryan
Surprise! Congress is
larding up the defense budget with miscellaneous taxpayer-funded boondoggles.
# $25,000,000 for the Hawaii Federal Health Care Network, added by Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii).# $23,000,000 for the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC), added by Rep. John “Jack” Murtha (D-Pa.). This is the project over which Rep. Murtha threatened a colleague for challenging in the spring. Since 1992, more than $509 million has been used to fund NDIC, which is administered by the Department of Justice (DOJ.). Ironically, DOJ does not want the NDIC and has asked Congress to shut the agency down because the department believes the operations are duplicative.# *$20,000,000 for historically black colleges and universities, added by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.).# $5,000,000 for Project SOAR, added by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa), and Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa).# *$5,000,000 for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Paralympic Military Program, added by Reps. Jim Langevin (D-R.I.) and Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.).# $4,800,000 for the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area added by Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.). The Gateway National Recreation Area’s website describes the Jamaica Bay Unit as “a wealth of history, nature and recreation, from New York City’s first major airport and coastal fortifications to a wildlife refuge and pristine beaches.”# *$3,000,000 for “The First Tee,” added by House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) The program’s mission, according to its website, is “To impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.” First Tee won CAGW’s “The Taxpayers Get Teed Off” Oinker Award in 2004 for receiving $3 million in two separate appropriations bills.
The First Tee? I’m sure that it’s a swell project, and Clyburn can prove it by using his own money to finance it. What, he doesn’t have $3 million laying around for that? Well neither do I and I suspect that you don’t either. If you do, let’s talk.
CAGW has uncovered quite a few other ridiculous big ticket items in the defense bill that have nothing whatsoever to do with defense. Like $2 million for “brown tree snakes.” $1.6 million for a telescope. &c.
I have three words for Congress: Line item veto. And four more words: Now more than ever.

Democrats yank border security from defense spending bill
posted at 10:10 am on November 8, 2007 by Bryan
They can find millions here and there for all kinds of non-defense related pork, but not for actual border security?
Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, said Tuesday that Democrats had stripped from a defense spending bill a $3 billion border-security amendment that the Senate passed overwhelmingly last month.
Graham said Democrats also attached conditions to the Iraq war funding, leading all Republican senators on a conference committee to refuse to sign the panel’s report.
“I’m incredibly disappointed,” Graham said in an interview. “Congress would serve itself well if we funded border security as my amendment proposes, and it would help us move the immigration debate further down the road.”
Maybe he should have told the porksters to shut up.
On a serious note, the Senate passed that amendment 95-1. So who yanked it?
Aides to Democratic leaders of the Senate and the House failed Tuesday evening to return phone calls seeking comment on Graham’s claims, or said they didn’t know anything about the issues. Graham planned to hold a news conference Wednesday with other senators.
The feckless Democrats are too busy hiding under their desks to answer the question.

Taliban Removal Saving 90,000 Children Per YearThe removal of the Taliban ended the brutal application of shari’a law that resulted in executions, mutilations, and oppression for Afghanistan’s adults. Now a new study by Johns Hopkins University shows that the destruction of the Taliban
saves thousands of children every year through access to modern medicine. The mortality rate for children under five years of age dropped by 25% in the five years since 2001:
Close to 90,000 children who would have died before age 5 in Afghanistan during Taliban rule will stay alive this year because of advances in medical care in the country, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Sunday.
The under-5 child mortality rate in Afghanistan has declined from an estimated 257 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2001 to about 191 per 1,000 in 2006, the Ministry of Public Health said, relying on a new study by Johns Hopkins University.
The U.N. and aid agency Save the Children both hailed the advances in health care in Afghanistan.
“This is certainly very positive news,” said the U.N. spokesman in Afghanistan, Adrian Edwards. “To come from such low life expectancy to see this improvement does appear to be an indication that the work on the health sector here is beginning to pay off.”
The UN deserves a round of applause in this effort. One of the tasks they manage to do without running away or abusing the locals is their outreach on behalf of children. UNICEF and other UN aid organizations have succeeded in helping to save children through the introduction of regular health care, parental education, and food deliveries. Hamid Karzai gave credit where it was due.
However, the reason the UN had access to do this work was because of the US effort to topple the Taliban. Had the US not invaded Afghanistan and assisted the Northern Alliance in deposing Mullah Omar and his band of lunatics, Afghan children would have continued to die needlessly by the tens of thousands. Their parents would also have continued to live in fear of death from the sadists of the Taliban.
Their mortality rate remains far too high. Afghan children at 5 or younger die at a rate of 191 per 1000, meaning that almost 20% of all such children will not live to see age 6. More work needs to be done, but thanks to the US military and the Bush administration, that work can be done. America can take pride in the hundreds of thousands of children who now live, thanks to our efforts to bring some measure of freedom to Afghanistan.

Protestor painted in ‘blood’ accosts Condoleezza Rice
Oct 25 01:46 AM US/Eastern
A woman with her hands painted blood-red confronted Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at the US Congress Wednesday, shouting “war criminal” before being hauled away by Capitol security.
Desiree Farooz accosted Rice ahead of her appearance at a House of Representatives hearing on US foreign policy, waving her hands just centimeters (inches) from the diplomat’s face inside the committee meeting room as television cameras captured the confrontation.
“The blood of millions of Iraqis is on your hands,” Farooz shouted, before police wrestled her away.
Several other people, members of the anti-war activist group Code Pink, were subsequently ejected from the room.

SHOCK DOCS: THE NEW REPUBLIC ‘SHOCK TROOPS’ STORY COLLAPSES
WED Oct 24 2007 12:29:44 ET
The DRUDGE REPORT has obtained internal documents from the investigation of THE NEW REPUBLIC’S “Baghdad Diarist”, Scott Thomas Beauchamp, an Army private turned war correspondent who reported tales of military malfeasance from the Iraq War front. The documents appear to expose that once the veracity of Beauchamp’s diaries were called into question, and an Army investigation ensued, THE NEW REPUBLIC has failed to publicly account for publishing slanderous falsehoods about the U.S. military in a time of war.
Document 1: Beauchamp Refuses to Stand by Story (Beauchamp Transcript Part 1) THE NEW REPUBLIC has been standing behind the stories from their Baghdad Diarist, Scott Thomas Beauchamp, since questions were first raised about their accuracy over the summer. On August 10, the editors at TNR accused the Army of “stonewalling” their investigation into the stories by preventing them from speaking with Beauchamp. The DRUDGE REPORT has since obtained the transcript of a September 7 call between TNR editor Frank Foer, TNR executive editor Peter Scoblic, and Private Beauchamp. During the call, Beauchamp declines to stand by his stories, telling his editors that “I just want it to end. I’m not going to talk to anyone about anything really.” The editors respond that “we just can’t, in good conscience, continue to defend the piece” without an explanation, but Beauchamp responds only that he “doesn’t care what the public thinks.” The editors then ask Beauchamp to cancel scheduled interviews with the WASHINGTON POST and NEWSWEEK.
Document 2: Beauchamp Admits to “Gross Exaggerations and Inaccurate Allegations” (Beauchamp Transcript Part 2) The DRUDGE REPORT has also obtained a signed “Memorandum for Record” in which Beauchamp recants his stories and concedes the facts of the Army’s investigation — that his stories contained “gross exaggerations and inaccurate allegations of misconduct” by his fellow soldiers.
Document 3: Army Investigation: Tales “Completely Fabricated,” Beauchamp Wanted to be Hemingway The third document obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT is the Army’s official report on the investigation into the allegations made by Private Beauchamp. The Army concluded that Beauchamp had “completely fabricated” the story of mocking a disfigured woman, that his description of a “Saddam-era dumping ground” was false, and that claims that he and his men had deliberately targeted dogs with their armored vehicles was “completely unfounded.” Further the report stated “that Private Beauchamp desired to use his experiences to enhance his writing and provide legitimacy to his work possibly becoming the next Hemingway.” The report concludes that “Private Beauchamp takes small bits of truth and twists and exaggerates them into fictional accounts that he puts forth as the whole truth for public consumption.”

Gitmo jihadi not sure why he was released — but promises to pick up where he left off
posted at 7:24 pm on October 22, 2007 by Allahpundit
Meet
Sadeq Mohammed Saeed. He spent six years in the pen after he was caught recovering at an Afghan hospital following a battle during the U.S. invasion in 2001 — at the tender age of 17. His brother, a former jihadist himself and currently an “Islamic activist” and “mosque speaker,” talks openly of his support for Bin Laden and the Taliban (”But I’m also calling for dialogue and respect of rights and freedoms for all, and I’m against violence and coercion”). He was extradited to Yemen in June for reasons unknown even to him but which I suspect have much to do with, ahem, improving America’s image in the world, and then released by Yemeni authorities
two weeks ago.
You want the punchline?
I’m not sure if you can handle the punchline.
According to Sadeq since leaving their families he and his companions had been performing a holy duty, or Jihad, and he vowed that they would continue to do so for as long as they lived.
“I traveled to Pakistan and from there to Afghanistan where I joined one of the Taliban battle lines, May Allah support them to protect Islam, and then what happened, happened,” he said. He did not speak about personal physical abuse in the detention center; instead he concentrated on the religious abuses, which he claims all detainees witnessed.
“The abuses were religious abuses, reviling God, the Prophet Mohammed and his companions and the believers. Some brothers were exposed to psychological and physical torture because they are Muslims. There were a lot of abuses and I don’t remember them but it is enough to say there were religious abuses and reviling Allah, his prophet and the believers,” he said…
Saqed’s family said they are currently consulting with American lawyers and human rights activists to file a law suit against the American government to demand fair compensation for the damages inflicted on their son who lost one of his eyes because of inadequate treatment…
“The only reason I know for being detained is that I’m Muslim, and I do not know any other thing. Now I do not know why they released me. This is at the hand of Allah.” [Sadeq] speculated.
Note how casually he connects jihad to his Islamic identity. He was picked up by U.S. troops for waging war on them in a war zone and he’s mystified as to why; to him, that sort of thing is simply what Muslims do, no different than being arrested for praying at the mosque, really. Commit his name to memory: odds are he’ll be turning up on another battlefield or as part of a terror cell somewhere and you’ll want that little mental bell to go off when he does so that you might properly express your feelings about it to our political leaders.
Exit question: How good do you feel right now about America’s image being improved with his release? Pretty darned good, I’m betting.

Taliban using human shields
TALIBAN militants used Afghan civilians as human shields during a battle with US forces in eastern Afghanistan, that left 20 Taliban and one civilian dead, and 11 civilians wounded.
The joint Afghan-Nato operation was launched in an area next to the border with Pakistan – with artillery fire and air strikes.
Major Charles Anthony said: “After talking with elders in the area it does seem the Taliban are using civilians as human shields.”

PETE STARK LOSES IT AGAIN
By Ed Driscoll · May 07, 2004 04:36 PM ·
The Return of the Primitive ·
War And Anti-WarPete Stark loses it again, after voting
against a House resolution condemning the prisoner abuse in Iraq while commending soldiers serving with honor. One of the constituents of the Democratic congressman from California, a member of the California Army National Guard, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion
sent Stark a fax questioning his judgment:
Staff Sergeant Dowd wrote politely and respectfully, “There are many soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen and Coast Guardsmen from your 13th congressional district who are serving with pride and distinction.” He called Fortney’s vote “a disgrace…way out of touch with the people of this district.” The fax drove Fortney to call this soldier up and leave this obscenity-laced torrent of insults on his answering machine:
“Dan, this is Congressman ‘Pete’ Stark, and I just got your fax and you don’t know what you’re talking about. So if you care about enlisted people you wouldn’t have voted for that thing, either. But probably somebody put you up to this, and I’m not sure who it was, but I doubt if you could spell half the words in the letter. Somebody wrote it for you so I don’t pay much attention to it, but I’ll call you back later and let you tell me more about why you think you’re such a great G–damn hero and why you think that this general and the defense department who forced these poor enlisted (bitter laughter) guys to do what they should shouldn’t be held to account. That’s the issue. So if you want to stick it to a bunch of enlisted guys have your way, but if you want to get to the bottom of people who forced this awful program in…Iraq, then you should understand more about it than you obviously do. Thanks.”The last time we noted Stark blowing a gasket
was last July, when he referred to a fellow congressman as a “fruitcake” and a “****sucker”.
